Our Services Mastering CDs STEWART ORR SOUND SERVICES will make recordings, and look after production and editing right through to the final CD manufacture. We have a full recording and editing control room, linked to a large studio space, so we can welcome you and your musicians to our premises, or we are also very happy to record on location. We specialise in churches and cathedrals, and have recently received a commendation from the Churches Media Council Andrew Cross Awards for the service broadcast from Norwich Cathedral to commemorate the centenary of Norwich City Football Club. Work of this nature has taken us to many cathedrals and churches in the U.K., as well as to Mexico and Vienna. Many of these recordings have been issued under our own label, as well as being broadcast on radio. ISDN link to other studios The studio complex at Prior’s Croft is equipped with ISDN technology for studio link-ups. This facility is regularly used by production companies based in London and elsewhere to import voices for commercials and commentaries. It is also used for live radio station radio car link-ups involving guests and other contributors. With the addition of a radio car receiver, the studio can be used as a radio car link for live transmission. Choral and orchestral concerts One of our chief activities has always been working with large orchestral and choral concerts. This may be for CD issue, or for live or subsequent radio transmission. We were involved in the broadcast of the Royal Maundy Service a few years ago, the evensong in commemoration of H.M. the Queen Mother, the Tsunami Disaster Memorial Service and the Centenary Thanksgiving Service for Norwich City Football Club, all taking place in Norwich Cathedral. This last received a commendation from the Churches Media Council Andrew Cross Awards. We also work closely with choral societies, schools and other groups to produce recordings for CD issue. These can be of live performances, or made during recording sessions. Truly no job is too large or too small! As every job is different, it is very difficult to give generalised prices. Please contact us for estimates and quotes. 2. CDs for sale – dialect and spoken word STEWART ORR SOUND SERVICES is proud to offer a range of our recordings for sale on compact disc. The current range can be viewed in our online catalogue. We hope to widen the selection very soon. STEWART ORR SOUND SERVICES has been involved in radio production for about 20 years now. For some 8 years Stewart Orr presented and produced the three hour Sunday evening programme “Norfolk Arts” on BBC Radio Norfolk, and has engineered live outside broadcasts from Norwich Cathedral for the same station. SOSS has also made many feature programmes for radio, these being largely recorded and produced at the SOSS studios at Prior’s Croft Barn. SOSS has produced a series of location programmes with Norfolk’s Sid Kipper, and was also involved in the Village Voice series on BBC Radio Norfolk. We thoroughly enjoy the challenges and problems of outside locations! Cathedrals and large churches have their own individual problems, as we have discovered over the last 20 years, but our experience combined with our 27 foot microphone stand can generally sort these out. The correct balance of direct sound with reverberation is crucial in these circumstances, too close and the sound will be dull and uninteresting, too far and it will be distant and indistinct. Tony Mallion, senior producer for BBC Radio Norfolk, was pleased with our recording of The Band of the Dragoon Guards which was broadcast on Christmas Day 2005. 4. Spoken word & talking books We have recently set up a small studio for voice recording. This is ideal for commentaries and commercials, but also we are recording talking books. So far we have recorded two of the Conan Doyle Professor Challenger stories with Nick Utechin reading, and, more recently Bungay Castle, with Patience Tomlinson. This latter book is a gothic romance originally published in 1796, and the launch of the talking version was concurrent with the republication of the book by the Zittaw Press of the USA in May 2006. We also have an expanding catalogue of other spoken word recordings also available on CD. We will soon be issuing these recordings in MP3 format, either on CD or downloadable. CD duplication is generally carried out in house. We are happy to accept orders of any size, and to arrange the on-body print on the surface of the discs. We will work from masters supplied, or those produced by. We can duplicate both audio and data CDs (including MP3, etc.)
The studio complex is housed in a converted barn in the Waveney Valley on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. The studio is large, and contains a fine Broadwood grand piano dating from about 1910. The voice studio is part of the studio area, and the control room is situated within adjacent office accommodation. In the main studio there is ample space for a number of instrumentalists and singers. We cover all sorts of music from classical to jazz, but we are not equipped for the requirements of multi-track pop! 6. Copies from rare and antique formats We can copy for the following rare and obsolete formats to CD:-
Please contact us with your requirements. Because we have well-equipped and roomy accommodation, Prior’s Croft Barn is an ideal venue for Executive Media Training. For training days we call upon colleagues regularly employed as television and radio presenters and producers as our tutors. During a typical day’s training there will be presentations from these media professionals, and most importantly, sessions in front of both microphone and camera. After a plenary session at the end, candidates are given recordings of their performance, and refresher notes to use before a media interview in the future. A mid-day lunch break is taken in a local hostelry, where discussion with the tutors may continue. Tea, coffee and fruit juice are available throughout the day. Executives from local government and from industry have benefited from our training sessions. As well as everything else we offer, we can do a little magic! If you have minidisc equipment you will no doubt be aware of the problems that can arise if the table of contents of a recording becomes corrupted. You may have experienced the dreadful moment when a fully recorded minidisc won’t play, and merely displays error messages. If this does happen to you, get in touch with us, and send in the disc. Although we cannot guarantee success, we have managed to retrieve the audio in the great majority of cases. If we are not successful, there will be no charge. It should be noted, however, that all editing and index information will be lost, and the disc will play straight through from the start as a single track, but you will have got all of the audio back! Prices on application 9. Home Front (World War II) Day for schools In the morning we give a multi-media presentation which takes KEY STAGE 2 children from the invasion of Poland and the start of the war, through to V.J. Day, and the explosion of the first atom bomb. In the afternoon the children take part in a number of specially conceived activities which range from receiving signals in Morse code, logging short wave radio programmes or taking part in a beetle drive. Travel included within Norfolk and Suffolk Topics raised by the presentation include:-
